Tour rookie Italo Ferreira (BRA) was lagging behind reigning World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) for most of their Quarterfinal faceoff. But then he pulled into a rare tube in tough conditions, battling back into the heat with a 9.67. He went on to win and head to Semifinals.
Local replacement surfer Frederico Morais (PRT), who had been wowing the crowd all day (and eliminating World No. 1 Mick Fanning (AUS) in the process) continued to impress, scoring a 9.13 for a big barrel at the start of his Round 4 heat.
Gabriel Medina (BRA) needed a big score to gain the lead in the dying minutes of Round 3. The reigning World Champ found the magic number with a huge display of above the lip surfing for a 9.50 and the advance to Round 4 at the Moche Rip Curl Pro.
Frederico Morais (PRT), a Portuguese replacement surfer at the Moche Rip Curl Pro, opened his Round 3 heat with this 9.13 to the delight of a huge hometown crowd. The score carried him to a win over World No. 1 and World Title contender Mick Fanning (AUS).
Frederico Morais (PRT), who was called up for competition due to a numbered of injury withdrawals, earned a 9.43 for a series of huge backside hacks at Moche Rip Curl Pro. Morais scored the first nine-point ride of the event and sent World No. 2 Adriano de Souza (BRA) to Round 2 in the process.
