The two--both former World Champions, former Bell ringers and both goofyfoots--put on a show that impressed the groms, the current elite and clearly the judges, earning one of the higher heat totals of the entire day. But it was Lynch that would claim victory.
The two Australians competed against each other in the late 80s and early 90s, with Lynch earning a World Title the year after Hardman had claimed his first. As with all rivalries the two were eager to relive the battles of old...and have the Bells Beach lineup entirely to themselves. Tricky conditions on Day 5 of the waiting period saw some of the world's best fall to rookies, and yet the heat between the former World Champs proved to be one of the most exciting matchups of the day with fourteen waves ridden between the two.
