QS Stars Stepping Up at Haleiwa

When conditions started to clean up at Haleiwa, a handful of surfers stepped up in firing surf at the Hawaiian Pro. Midway through the day, a select group of Portuguese and Californian surfers stood out. Young San Clemente natives Ian Crane and Griffin Colapinto showed maturity in heavy conditions, as they manhandled their ways to Round Two wins. Another San Clemente standout, Tanner Gudauskas, also nearly clinched a win, but Portugal's Vasco Ribeiro had other plans and posted a last-minute 9.37 to take the heat. Vasco's fellow countryman, Frederico Morais, fed off of that two heats later, when he posted an even bigger score, a 9.77. That near-perfect performance secured his win over Brett Simpson, another on-fire Californian.
