Bombo Beach turned into a feeding frenzy for aspiring junior surfers today for event five of the Subway® Surf Series, as some of Australia's and the world's best and most promising junior surfers duked it out in playful two-foot waves.
Reef Heazlewood continued his rampage through the series today taking out his round two heat. The lightening fast goofy-footer made light work of the shifting peaks and moved through a hotly contested battle with fellow Sunshine Coast surfer Noah Stocca, Billy Harrison and Dylan Moffatt who finished in second, third and fourth respectively.

"I've been having an unreal time in Kiama and have had some really fun warm-up surfs prior to my heats," said Heazlewood. "It's really important to me to finish this series with a few more solid results and hopefully hold onto that first place spot on the rankings."
Mikey McDonagh showed that patience was vitally important in his second round heat, only catching two waves, but managing to muster up a near perfect 9.00 scoring wave. In the relatively wave-starved heat, McDonagh scratched into one of the only decent waves over the window of the heat and proceeded to execute two giant frontside snaps. McDonagh will meet Noah Stocca, Alister Reginato and Finn Hill in round three tomorrow.

"I was definitely lucky I waited for that wave," said McDonagh. "Generally getting a good score like that can get you on a bit of a roll, but nothing really came through to me after that wave. Hopefully I can take a bit of confidence from this into the heats tomorrow."
Kyuss King managed to perform some last minute heroics to claim the top spot in his second round heat. In the low-scoring affair, King found a vital 5.00 scoring wave to claim the victory and cement his spot into the third round tomorrow.

"It's definitely a relief to get through that heat," said King. "I was kinda shaking at the end when I caught that wave, but I'm definitely stoked to have finished it, even if it wasn't the biggest score. My goal is definitely to get a good result here and hopefully push myself further up the rankings."
Having qualified for the 2016 World Junior Championships in Kiama back in January, Sandon Whittaker is well acquainted with the Bombo Beach peaks, which is something he used to positive effect in his second round heat. Whittaker managed to post the highest wave score of the event - a near perfect 9.40 - to take a convincing victory over his fellow rivals.

"That wave really delivered for me in that heat," said Whittaker. "The waves changed a lot throughout the day so I altered my equipment and thankfully it worked. I really want to get in a position where I'm back here for the 2017 World Junior Championships again early next year."
