After watching John John Florence fall in the first heat of Round Three, Owen Wright joined Jordy Smith in the effort to gain ground. The two big men on Tour are tied in the No. 2 spot on the Jeep Leaderboard, so while closing the gap on Florence is job one, keeping pace with each other goes without saying. Wright watched Smith survived his Round Three match against Jadson Andre in Heat 7, adding fuel to his fire as he faced off against a very dangerous Nat Young. He needed it too. Young presented a big challenge, racking up 15.86 points. But Wright surfed fast, loose, and crisp in the small surf, reminding everyone how dangerous he can be in every condition. He bagged a pair of mid-range 8s to take the win, keeping stride with Smith.
