South African hero Jordy Smith managed to fend off trials winner Dale Staples and move to Round Three in a nail-biter of a heat. Smith was holding onto a narrow lead in the closing moments of the heat with Staples only needing a 4.17. Holding priority with under two minutes in the slow moving conditions Smith let Staples have a wave, gambling there'd be something better out the back. But there wasn't. Fortunately for Smith, Staples came up just shy of the score he needed.
