In an interesting twist of fate, World No. 9 Filipe Toledo and No. 28 Kanoa Igarashi once again found themselves squaring off with high stakes on the line. Their last two head-to-head match ups included contentious circumstances, with Toledo getting flagged for priority interferences to start their heats at the Oi Rio Pro and in Huntington Beach for the US Open of Surfing. In both cases Igarashi got the better of Toledo and a budding rivalry has emerged between the two young surfers. Toledo ensured that third time wasn't a charm to open their Quarterfinal at Lowers, however, latching onto a high-scoring left that became his best score of the heat.
