Post Show Report: Contenders Keep Falling in Portugal

On Saturday at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, we witnessed the official end to the 2017 World Title hopes of Filipe Toledo and Owen Wright. On Sunday we saw another round of contenders fall, with Matt Wilkinson and Adriano de Souza being mathematically eliminated from contention. The bigger news, however, was the second-straight Round Three loss of Jordy Smith who, up until two weeks ago, had been sporting the Jeep Leaders' jersey for a few months. His early exit means that the 2017 World Title is now John John Florence's to lose. While Smith, Gabriel Medina and Julian Wilson are still in contention, the road for Florence is much more clear. The WSL commentary team breaks it down.
