Heat 1: Taj Burrow (AUS) 14.53, Fredrick Patacchia (HAW) 14.10, Mitch Crews (AUS) 13.00
The opening clash in the non-elimination Round 4 between Taj Burrow, Mitch Crews and Fredrick Patacchia was an impressive display of three diverse approaches to wave-riding.
Burrow with his searing rail game and explosive through-the-roof repertoire, Patacchia with with his razor-sharp backhand attack and the rookie Crews in possession of a polished and exciting arsenal of maneuvers.
Heat 2: Gabriel Medina (BRA) 14.93, Mick Fanning (AUS) 14.70, C.J. Hobgood (USA) 9.53
Round 4 progressed with local favorite and reigning three-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning taking on goofy-footers Gabriel Medina and C.J. Hobgood.
The heat would get off to a slow start, but solid scores from both Fanning and Medina would see the lead flip-flop throughout the 30 minute affair.
Medina would lock in an excellent 8-point ride to surpass Fanning and while the local favorite put in a hard-fought effort in the dying minutes of the heat, he'd fall just short of the scores needed to surpass Medina.
Medina advanced directly to the Quarterfinals, with Fanning and Hobgood relegated to Round 4.
Heat 3: Adriano de Souza (BRA) 14.87, Kelly Slater (USA) 13.77, Josh Kerr (AUS) 10.77
Three of the most in-form surfers of the event clashed in Heat 3 of Round 4, with 11-time ASP World Champion and defending event winner Kelly Slater facing off against Brazilian powerhouse Adriano de Souza and Gold Coast flyboy Josh Kerr.
De Souza, who claimed the 6-Star Australian Open of Surfing earlier this season, continued his surgical dismantling of the Snapper walls while Slater blitzed sections with a dynamic array of maneuvers. Kerr struggled to find waves that allowed for significant scoring opportunity and will look for redemption in Round 5.
Heat 4: Joel Parkinson (AUS) 13.94, Miguel Pupo (BRA) 11.04, Nat Young (USA) 10.90
Local favorite Joel Parkinson would do battle with the next generation of Nat Young and Miguel Pupo, with all three of the international campaigners quickly finding their feet and posting midrange scores.
Parkinson's local knowledge and veteran experience would see the Australian pull away, despite only logging midrange scores, while both Young and Pupo stumbled in their attempts to battle back.

Heat 1: C.J. Hobgood (USA) 13.53 def.Fredrick Patacchia (HAW) 13.20
The opening clash of the elimination Round 5 was a battle of the goofy-footers with Fredrick Patacchia taking on C.J. Hobgood.
With both surfers experiencing a career renaissance of sorts, the action was sharp and the backhand assault on the Snapper Bank was exciting from start to finish.
Heat 2: Mick Fanning (AUS) 18.40 def. Mitch Crews (AUS) 10.27
Heat 2 of sudden-death Round 4 would see a battle between two Gold Coast locals, with veteran Mick Fanning taking on rookie Mitch Crews.
While Crews proved to be a giant-killer during his rookie debut, he was unable to find a rhythm against Fanning. Fanning would decimate the Snapper Rocks lineup, building momentum throughout the local affair while securing a Quarterfinals berth with a pair of two 9-point rides.
Heat 3: Kelly Slater (USA) 16.26 def. Nat Young (USA) 14.40
Clean conditions prevailed as 11-time ASP World Champ and defending event winner Kelly Slater faced off against compatriot and 2013 ASP Rookie of the Year Nat Young in Round 5 of competition.
The young goofy-footer showed no signs of rolling over in the face of such an established adversary, taking his celebrated backhand to the Snapper walls with vigor.
Slater, however, continued to utilize his decades of experience at the venue an unparalleled arsenal to dissect the running righthanders and advance into the Quarterfinals.
Heat 4: Miguel Pupo (BRA) 16.40 def. Josh Kerr (AUS) 15.20
The final Round 5 heat would see an on-fire Miguel Pupo take on Gold Coast local Josh Kerr in firing conditions at Snapper Rocks.
Pupo would strike first, logging two high scores with excellent backhand combinations. Kerr would answer back, logging a high eights of his own, but was unable to find a backup score, with Pupo holding on for the win.
