The ASP 3-Star Rip Curl Pro Stamina opened with a lengthy day of competitive surfing at Playa Grande, Mar del Plata, Argentina. A total of 24 heats were completed and competition will continue throughout Sunday. A total of U$ 55,000 in prize money and valuable ASP ranking points (2,000 points towards the ASP South America Series and 750 points towards the ASP Qualifying Series) will be up for grabs for the international array of athletes.

Jihad Khodr (BRA) won the Rip Curl Pro Argentina title in 2013 and began his campaign for a repeat victory by scoring a heat total of 16.10, allowing him to advance into the Round of 64.

“I was really calm and focused in my heat,” said Khodr. “I know that it's going to be very difficult to win this event again, but I just have to remain sharp.”

Other high scores throughout the day included single-wave scores of 9.0 by Yan Daberkow (BRA) and 9.4 by Bruno Galini (BRA). Today's highest heat total of a 16.50 given to Marcos Correa (BRA).

The Rip Curl Pro Stamina is the opening event of the 2014 ASP South America Series and is composed of 112 athletes worldwide representing Argentina, Brazil, the USA, Chile, Peru, Australia, South Africa, Japan, Uruguay, Ecuador, France, Spain, Venezuela and others.

A few international standouts include Jake Halstead (USA), Ethan Egiguren (EUK), Dimitri Ouvre (GLP), Yago Dora (BRA), Marco Giorgi (URY) and Reo Inaba (JPN) who all advanced into the Round of 64 where they will face the event's top seeds.
