Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) forced WCT No. 4 Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) and No. 10 Coco Ho (HAW) into the elimination round with her underdog victory.
Buitendag is in danger of leveling off, struggling to match her performance at the Gold Coast where she finished in second place.
Ho posted mid-range scores but needed one better to outpace her opponents.
Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) solidified her Heat 2 victory with wave selection that saw her improve throughout the heat.
Johanne Defay (FRA) tallied the most scores but the least amount of points in her Heat 2 outing.
Defay needed an excellent score to overcome Fitzgibbons' lead but the surf didn't produce.

Carissa Moore (HAW) remains the athlete-to-beat in women's competition, winning the direct advance to Round 3.
Defending event champion Tyler Wright (AUS) found a little cover late in the heat, helping her to build a decent lead.
Pauline Ado (FRA) looked like she was going to take the heat until Wright posted back-to-back midrange scores late in the heat.
Laura Enever (AUS), pleased with her victory over World No. 2 Stephanie Gilmore (AUS).
Enever overtook the lead with a 6.83 late in the heat.
Gilmore caught a solid grab but leveled off significantly as the heat progressed.
Lakey Peterson (USA) got off to a slow start but used her powerful throws to maintain the lead and advance to Round 3.
