Carlos Munoz (CRI), a little-known wildcard at the 2014 Hurley Pro at Trestles, won his Round 1 heat over current WCT leader Gabriel Medina (BRA) with an eleventh-hour wave. The shocker sent Medina to a sudden-death heat, and sent Munoz straight into the spotlight. Munoz scored his event entry with the support of his country, where nearly 15,000 people voted for him in the Hurley Pro Video Trials. He is the first Costa Rican ever to compete in a WCT competition.
