Surfest organizers and competitors kicked off event trials for the men's Burton Automotive Pro men's, the women's Burton Automotive Pro and the Hunter Business Boardriders Pro Junior. the trials ran in solid 8-foot (2.5-meter) waves at Birubi Point in NSW, Australia.

Contest conditions like this are rare for these competitors. The surfers, who are vying for spots in the Qualifying Series (QS) and Junior Tour (JT) events, took full advantage.

The men's competition saw 16 surfers gunning for a bid into the Burton event, a points-rich QS6000. From the starting horn, they were scoring rides in the excellent range (an 8.00 or above). Surfing prodigy Jack Robinson, from Margaret River in Western Australia, scored two 10-point rides and a 9.50 his first round heat.

But it was 19-year-old Caves Beach surfer James McMorland who convincingly won the Burton Automotive Pro wildcard trials for the second year in a row. McMorland earned a spot in the Round of 96 on Merewether Beach where he will again meet Burton Automotive Pro top seed Joel Parkinson (AUS), the 2012 WSL World Champion and winner of the 2013 Surfest.

In the women's competition Nakia Fleuren (AUS), who is new to the competitive surf scene, took the women's wildcard, earning a spot in the Round of 48 where she will also meet the top seed in that event.
