Waimea has always kinda been the main proving ground for big wave surfers here in Hawaii and for surfers around the world. It's a bit different today. Nowadays its paddling in to bombs at Jaws, Mavericks, Puerto, wild Coastlines off Europe, huge Point Breaks and outer reefs in South America. When the Bay is on though, she is a thing of beauty and offers one of the most challenging drops out there. In the end I think we all kind of circle back towards Waimea. Rich with cultural history and stories from legendary surfers (many of whom still surf out there regularly) at one of the most magical settings on earth. This pic was in the early days of surfing Waimea for myself cerca 2000. @captain_freed shaped me this board. It was my first custom gun. A 10'0 single fin. We made it around Halloween so I painted it with orange and grey stripes with skull stencils. I had a two wave hold down on this one. I know what she can do and will always have the upmost respect for her.
