Surfing on the Championship Tour has been a dream of Macy Callaghan since growing up on the New South Wales Central Coast beach of Avoca. Her whole family was always in the water and Callaghan originally competed in surf lifesaving, before her mum bought her a bodyboard. When the 8-year-old kept standing up on it, her parents quickly realized she needed a surfboard.
She won her first event as a 10-year-old riding her dad’s board, got hooked on competition, ditched all the other sports she was playing and dedicated herself to surfing. One Australian Open title and two junior Australian titles followed over the next few years as Callaghan started making a name for herself at home and overseas.
She missed out by a single heat of qualifying for the Championship Tour in 2017, but came back from that disappointment to make it in 2018. Her first full rookie year (she competed as an injury replacement in 2018, making a Final in France) didn’t exactly go to plan, but yet again her QS form meant she booked at CT table for 2020.
Callaghan has since relocated to Kingscliff, near the surf epicenter that is Coolangatta, and with more experience and a little luck, the powerful and smooth natural footer has the talent to make serious inroads on the CT.
