Courtney Conlogue was able to turn small waves into big points en route to her third CT win of 2015. - WSL / Poullenot/Aquashot
Just two events are left in the women's 2015 Championship Tour (CT) season, and the results at the Cascais Women's Pro have brought the World Title race to a fever pitch. Courtney Conlogue (USA) has won the event, shaking up the rankings yet again and forcing another swap of the leader's yellow jersey. She replaces Carissa Moore (HAW) as the Jeep Leader going into the Roxy Pro France.
To reclaim the No. 1 spot and grab the jersey back, Conlogue only needed to make the Final. Moore, who took the jersey from Conlogue after the last event at Trestles, was eliminated in Round 4, leaving the door open for a new Jeep leader. But before she could reclaim the lead, Conlogue was pitted against Fitzgibbons in the Semis she had her work cut out for her: The last time to two met in a Semifinal was at the 2015 Vans US Open of Surfing, where the Aussie defeated her American opponent.
This time around, Conlogue held a lead with minimal scores as Fitzgibbons searched for a substantial backup. But when it arrived Conlogue upped the ante, logging a midrange score to maintain the lead. Staying close to her opponent, Conlogue was avenged, advancing to the Final and regaining the World No. 1 spot.
Lakey Peterson advanced to her first Final of 2015, ultimately earning a runner-up finish for the event. - WSL / Poullenot/Aquashot
Peterson, meanwhile, won the her Semifinal heat with a game plan that relied on selectivity, in contrast to her eager opponent Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW). With just three waves to the rookie's 10, Peterson was still able to secure a win and make her first Final of the season.
The Final battle was a rematch of sorts from the surfers' pasts: Peterson and Conlogue faced each other in a Qualifying Series Final at nearby Estoril in 2011. In that heat, Conlogue took the win and this time she doubled down.
Peterson opened with a smooth series of carves on her frontside and an immediate keeper score -- a 7.17. Conlogue on the other hand looked hesitant, logging minimal scores to start. But she found her rhythm at the halfway point, earning an excellent-range score (8.00 and above) to narrow the gap. With fewer than five minutes to go, she picked up speed on another left, throwing as much spray as she could. The performance earned her another excellent score, and the final lead change for the win.
Next up for the Elite 17 is the Roxy Pro France at the famous beachbreak Hossegor. Watch live here and on the WSL app beginning October 6 local time.
