To the Nines: Pros Throw Huge Scores in Portugal

Rookie Italo Ferreira (BRA) earned his best result of the season with his first Final appearance at the Moche Rip Curl Pro. The Final also included one of his highest scores to date--a 9.93 for a massive backside air-reverse.

Tour rookie Italo Ferreira (BRA) was lagging behind reigning World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) for most of their Quarterfinal faceoff. But then he pulled into a rare tube in tough conditions, battling back into the heat with a 9.67. He went on to win and head to Semifinals.

Brazilian rookie Italo Ferreira (BRA) made an aggressive free fall float to turn combo for a 9.00 during Round 4 of the Moche Rip Curl Pro advancing directly to Quarterfinals over Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Michel Bourez (PYF).

Local replacement surfer Frederico Morais (PRT), who had been wowing the crowd all day (and eliminating World No. 1 Mick Fanning (AUS) in the process) continued to impress, scoring a 9.13 for a big barrel at the start of his Round 4 heat.

After slipping to last place in Round 4 and needing two new scores to catch up, Kolohe Andino (USA) battled back with a perfect 10 in Round 4 of the Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal.

Filipe Toledo (BRA) kicked off his Round 4 heat with a deep tube and turn to earn a 9.23 at the Moche Rip Curl Pro.

Filipe Toledo (BRA) started off with an excellent score in Round 4 and backed it up with a 9.77 for an enormous air to combo the field less than three minutes into his heat.

Gabriel Medina (BRA) needed a big score to gain the lead in the dying minutes of Round 3. The reigning World Champ found the magic number with a huge display of above the lip surfing for a 9.50 and the advance to Round 4 at the Moche Rip Curl Pro.

Injury replacement Caio Ibelli (BRA) battled back against Gabriel Medina (BRA), snagging a deep tube for a 9.77 in Round 3 of the Moche Rip Curl Pro.

In his Round 3 heat at the Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal, Nat Young (USA) hacks into a right for a big score in Peniche. He went on to win his heat to stay in the contest.

Jeremy Flores (FRA) lit up a right during Round 3 of the Moche Rip Curl Pro for a 9.43 in his win over C.J. Hobgood (USA).

Frederico Morais (PRT), a Portuguese replacement surfer at the Moche Rip Curl Pro, opened his Round 3 heat with this 9.13 to the delight of a huge hometown crowd. The score carried him to a win over World No. 1 and World Title contender Mick Fanning (AUS).

Frederico Morais (PRT), who was called up for competition due to a numbered of injury withdrawals, earned a 9.43 for a series of huge backside hacks at Moche Rip Curl Pro. Morais scored the first nine-point ride of the event and sent World No. 2 Adriano de Souza (BRA) to Round 2 in the process.
