Highlights: Big Upsets, Big Drama

More solid surf poured into Huntington Beach on Day 4 of the Vans US Open, this time from the same long-period south swell that had dumped its significant energy on the Big Wave Tour's Puerto Escondido Challenge just a few days ago. The fresh energy and sultry conditions provided a sizzling backdrop for the drama that unfolded in the water, where the top two seeds in the women's draw were sent packing by a pair of surfers better known for their big grins than their newfound, steely gazes. On the men's side, the QS contingent struck down a half-dozen of their CT combatants in Round Three after struggling to keep pace with the elite Tour crew in Round Two.
