One of the first south swells of the summer hit Southern California just in time for the Fourth of July weekend, to the delight of swell-starved surfers celebrating the holiday.

While Trestles in San Clemente was a magnet for much of the West Coast surf world, some of the usual characters you would expect to see shredding lowers were actually down in Mexico.

Kade Matson and Crosby Colapinto were scoring, as was Jett Schilling who locked into a huge cavern.

Considering how tightly contested the lineup would have been at Lowers with the holiday weekend and the first decent swell in months, it looks like the decision to venture further afield really paid off. And Mexico's repute as a home for huge beach brake barrels was on full display.

As a sojourn Bali is a right of passage for surfers in the Antipodes, such is a mission south for young surfers from California. It looks like the tradition is alive and well.

Meanwhile, here's another look at some of the action from Lowers.
