For the trials of the 2005 Pipe Masters, the waves were huge. North Shore-raised Pipe specialist Kalani Chapman paddled out on a 9'6" shaped by his uncle, Owl Chapman, and won every heat, including logging a Perfect 10. Surfing his first ever ‘CT event, Chapman faced off against Kelly Slater in four separate heats, battling the champ every step of the way and beating him twice. In the quarterfinal, Chapman challenged Slater for a split peak and handed the champ an interference, paving the way for Andy Irons' third Pipe Masters and third Triple Crown. Chapman took fourth in the final, but was first to the podium, chaired on the shoulders of Jamie O'Brien and Jason to Federico to ask the announcer, "What'd I win?"
