45: Floridian Jeff Crawford Wins Pipe Masters

Gerry Lopez was the demi-god. Rory Russell was the daredevil Prince. Jeff Crawford was from Canaveral Pier, Florida. What?

Jeff had an idea about Pipeline. Here's what he told Surfing magazine about it: "(I) came here and saw that what worked in Florida worked here. It's basically the same thing. Pipeline is just a big Sebastian left."

Pipeline like Florida?

Yet on a solid north-angled day in 1974, Crawford took it on to break Gerry's two-event streak, and become the first non-Hawaiian winner of the Masters.

And maybe he had a point about Pipe being Sebastian Inlet, because Jeff Crawford wasn't the last guy from Central Florida to win this contest...
