Rob Machado grew up with a picture of Gerry Lopez surfing Pipeline over his bed. But for much of his career he never believed he'd master waves like that himself, much less win the Pipe Masters. And so, like a self-fulfilling prophecy, he didn't. The closest he would come would be his 1995 "High Five" incident. But in 2000, that all changed. Machado demonstrated Lopez-like poise throughout the entire event, scored a Perfect 10 in the final, was chaired up the beach by his friends, and all was right in the universe once again. After nine years on tour, it's the only trophy Machado keeps in his house.
