It's been amazing few days of waves on the Gold Coast as Cyclone Gretel delivered incredible waves to the Superbank and beyond. While the Corona Open Gold Coast had been canceled, many of the world's best surfers have remained on the Gold Coast to sample the fresh swell.
Griffin Colapinto, Leo Fioravanti, Mikey Wright, Jack Freestone, Wade Carmichael, Stephanie Gilmore and Malia Manuel were just a few of the 2020 CT Class sampling the epic sandbanks at Snapper.
However, as usual, it was the local crew who dominated. Mick Fanning has returned the water after last year's knee operation and already looks close to being back to his best.
Nick Vasicek is easily one of the best goofy footers ever to surf on the Gold Coast and invariably scores some of the best waves of the day. Yesterday was no different.
Young QS ripper Sheldon Simkus is rapidly ascending the Snapper Rocks' chain of command. The smooth natural footer bagged a few below sea level tubes and added some big turns into the mix.
However all the action wasn't just entered on the Superbank. Further north Burleigh Heads was dishing out its famous green-hued barrels.
Other surfers opted to head south to escape the crowds that were measured in the hundreds on the Superbank. Justin Gane, the Aussie filmmaker who made 1990s surf film cult classics like 'Pulse', Supa Dupa and Margo's biopic Wanderjah, was on hand to see Reef Heazlewood unwind.
"Today was my first day shooting for a new upcoming surf film after 15 years in retirement," Gane told the WSL, " A pretty good start to see Reef do this huge air, don't you think?"
