Tahiti Dawn Patrol: Off for Day, Fanning Up Close

Amid small-scale but building surf, competition was called off for the first day of the Billabong Pro Tahiti's waiting period. In a uniquely personal interview, Mick Fanning (AUS) opens up about what his homecoming was like after his encounter with a shark, and his relief at focusing on Tahiti.

Plus, get the latest Surfline forecast, which predicts a slow increase in wave size:

FRIDAY 14th: Small surf for the first half of the day. Poor conditions with S wind.
Swell/Surf: Old SSE swell and the first signs of new SW swell prevail through the morning, although surf is generally below head high. Look for the new SW swell to build in the afternoon/evening with surf running from head high to a few feet overhead by dark. Wind/Weather: S wind 10-15kts

SATURDAY 15th: Medium+ size, shorter to mid period SW swell peaks in the AM, eases for the PM. SSE/SE trades.
Swell/Surf: Somewhat jumbled 8-10' faces (overhead to double overhead), with some larger sets possible in the morning up to 12' on the face. Strongest during the morning, with a decreasing trend through the afternoon. Wind/Weather: SSE shifting SE trades 10-15kts.*
