WSL Africa is proud to announce that the inaugural edition of the Cape Town Pro presented by Quiksilver, comprising QS1000 events for men and women, will be run at Big Bay, Bloubergstrand, on May 7-8.
The contest will be the first QS-rated event for women to be staged in the city since 1992. It has attracted the country's top surfers who will be competing for a prize-purse of R20 000 and valuable rankings points on both the QS and WSL Africa rankings.
"We are really happy to add the Cape Town Pro presented by Quiksilver to the WSL Africa calendar and thank all those who have made it possible," said Colin Fitch, Operations Manager for WSL Africa. "Hosting rated events in Africa is vital for the careers of our local members and gives them the opportunity to qualify for WSL events worldwide."
The event will use a 24-women format and will be held in the multiple random peaks at Big Bay with the iconic Table Mountain and Robben Island as backdrops.
Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ms. Anroux Marais, who has taken surfing lessons, was thrilled in both her personal capacity and as a Minister that the Western Cape Government was supporting the event.
"I'm very excited about being part of the Cape Town Pro and will be attending as much of the event as possible, both as the Minister and as a surfing enthusiast," she said. "I'm particularly happy that the Cape Town Pro will include the first internationally rated pro women's event to be held in the city since the dawn of democracy."
Global apparel brand Quiksilver is happy to partner with the Cape Town Pro to promote the sport.
"We're very excited to be partnering in this event and investing in surfing in South Africa," said Dane Patterson, Quiksilver Sales and Marketing Manager. "There is an abundance of talented surfers in South Africa and events like this give them the opportunity to showcase their skills and progress their careers."
The Cape Town Pro is supported by the City of Cape Town, the Dept of Cultural Affairs and Sport of the Western Cape Government, Quiksilver, Red Bull and Accelerate Sport.
