Tatiana Weston-Webb surfs under the Hawaiian banner, but her Brazilian fans know better. When the striking blonde comes to town, she gets a hometown hero's greeting, which she replies to in perfect Portuguese.
The 2015 Rookie of the Year has roots in Brazil thanks to her mother who was a local bodysurfer. She visits regularly and even has a reality TV show with her boyfriend, QS surfer and Sao Paulo native Jesse Mendes.
In her make-or-break heat against Sage Erickson in Round Four of the Oi Rio Women's Pro, this kind of support made all the difference.
As the two girls traded similar scores, Weston-Webb remained composed and relied on her refined beach break skills. When the hooter sounded and she was on the winning end of the scoreboard.
In an interview prior to the contest, Weston-Webb told WSL, "I had a lot of fans there and was shocked. But I want to support them as much as they support me, so now I'm engaging with them more and in that case, I think my fan base there has grown."
Next up, Weston-Webb faces World No. 1 Courtney Conlogue in the Quarterfinals. Tune in at 7 a.m. local time to see if the contest will resume.
