Incredible performances at the inaugural GADIS Junior Pro Ferrol

The GADIS Junior Pro Ferrol wrapped up today in small but fun two-to-three foot surf. Here's a breakdown of the event's finals.

Men's Junior Final:

The 17-year-old Basque surfer from Zarautz, Adur Amatriain, cemented himself as one of the rising stars in Europe with his third win in a row. Amatriain was clearly still tasting the victory from his massive win at the ABANCA Pantin Classic Galicia Pro, and this motivation carried him through four straight heat wins to reach the Finals in Ferrol.

Amatriain got to work immediately, opening with a 6.67 and backing it up with an excellent 8.50 for a total of 15.17. With the rest of the field in a combination situation, Amatriain was leading the heat from start to finish.

Joaquim Chaves was the only surfer who could get close to Amatriain, but still required an excellent wave to get into the lead. Chaves kept on fighting right until the end, finishing runner-up with a total of 13.07.

Despite an incredible build-up throughout the event, Sam Piter luck ran out in the Final. After annihilating his opponents in the earlier rounds, Piter tried everything but couldn't get out of the combination situation.   Kytann Foret improved in every round leading up to the Final, but could only manage two low-range scores in the end and bowed out in fourth place.

Janire Gonzalez Etxabarri (ESP) Janire Gonzalez Etxabarri - WSL / Laurent Masurel

Women's Junior Final:

Janire Gonzalez Etxabarri was the one to beat from the start, winning all her heats leading up to the Final. She stayed busy throughout the Final and improved her scores with every ride, locking in a total of 12.06.   Francisca Veselko put on an impressive performance throughout the event, scoring the only excellent heat in the Women's competition in the Round of 32. Veselko was playing catch-up for most of the heat, but a wave in the dying seconds gave her the score she needed to snatch the runner-up spot away from Lucia Machado.

Machado will still top the European Junior rankings with this result, but Etxabarri is close on her heels. This was the second time that Etxabarri triumphed over Machado in a final. Their previous match-up was at the 2020 Junior Pro Espinho where Etxabarri is the defending champ.   Hina-Maria Conradi (FRA) had a great weekend in Ferrol, earning a career-best result with her first Final appearance on the Junior Tour.
