De Souza Injured in Free Surf, OK to Compete in J-Bay

This just in from The Inertia:

Adriano de Souza broke his nose this week while freesurfing. According to his Facebook page, the Brazilian was "inside the tube and ended up not seeing this surfer, who wasn't on the wave but trying to cross it."

But don't worry about your Fantasy Surfer pick. De Souza, who sits at sixth place in the world rankings, underwent surgery to set the bone and will be able to compete at the J-Bay Open next month. After the season is done, he plans on having a second surgery to reset his septum, and possibly reconstructive surgery as well.

"Thank God it wasn't worse," De Souza said on Facebook. "This accident could have left me out of the water for many years if the board had hit me somewhere else in the head."
