TRUE WORDSRepost and text from @korduroy "This is a beautiful photo of a not so beautiful practice that we've become very dependent on. Since The Green Revolution over 60 years ago, we've slowly replaced the need for healthy soil with quick fix fossil fuel inputs. The result is a treadmill of pests and weeds which require more and more toxic herbicides. We have lost over 30% of our world's healthy top soils which are bleeding into our oceans, releasing astronomical amounts of carbon leading to acidification. It takes over 30 years for soil health to return. That's a long time. For the first time in history crop yield increases are slowing, despite more fertilizer and herbicide inputs than ever. The lie that industrial/chemical ag is the only way to feed the world is now obvious. It's just a matter of whether we wake up in time and remember that 70% of the world's food is grown on only 30% of the world's agriculture lands, by small-scale peasant farmers for their local communities. The scariest part is this remaining land and water are are being taken away from these farmers by large corporate interests who are only producing 30% of the world's food which are often doused with chemicals. These companies are more interested in growing commodity crops like cotton, soy, canola and corn that are largely used for fashion, fuel and animal feed. Things are going to get real here real soon, and our leisure loving, adventure-seeking, lifestyle will become more and more obsolete and unimportant. Learn to grow food, catch water and build relationships with those who live around you (not just the avatars we create on social media). This is a time for humility and respect for the basics, the natives and the elders. Choose wisely friends!"
