Australians Jack Freestone and Bronte Macaulay have earned wildcard spots for the Quiksilver Pro and the Roxy Pro, respectively, after winning the event trials. Freestone, a two-time Junior Tour champion, started the season with a ninth-place finish at the 6,000-point Hurley Australian Open. He took second place at the next event, the Burton Automotive Pro, where he landed technical aerials in every heat for his best QS finish. Freestone will face three-time World Champion Mick Fanning and Tour rookie Matt Banting in an all-Aussie Round 1 battle.
Trials winner Macaulay will face Gilmore and Lima in Round 1 of the Roxy Pro. - WSL / Kelly Cestari
Macaulay has also had an impressive start to her 2015 season. She's competed in all three opening QS events with two Quarterfinals finishes and a runner-up finish at the Scoot Burleigh Pro Women. Macaulay was one of the standout surfers of the Scoot Burleigh Pro, posting the highest single-wave score of the women's division, a 9.65. She'll face reigning six-time World Champ Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) and Silvana Lima (BRA) in Round 1.
Dane Reynolds (USA) had been previously selected as the first wildcard for the men's event and will face reigning World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Brazilian rookie Wiggolly Dantas in Round 1. Reynolds has been developing quite the quiver, hoping to advance further than he has in years past.
Watch Reynolds, Freestone, Macaulay and the world's best compete at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and the Roxy Pro Gold Coast. The events will run from February 28 to March 11, 2015, and will be broadcast LIVE on worldsurfleague.com. Tune in for Dawn Patrol at 7:30 a.m. local time for the official call.
