The Taiwan Open of Surfing hosted by Taitung County officially got underway today with the opening ceremony being held at the event site at Jinzun Harbour. The international field of competitors along with local and national Taiwanese dignitaries attended the event which will be the biggest yet in its first year as a QS1,500.
WSL Australasia General Manager Steve Robertson enjoyed the cultural opening ceremony at the event site today.
"I'm really impressed by the Taiwan coastline and surf set ups throughout Taitung County," Robertson said. "I can't imagine how many perfect waves are going unridden throughout the year along this stretch of coastline, there seems to be waves everywhere."
With the action set to get underway tomorrow morning, the event site and facilities are looking bigger and better than ever.
"The Taiwanese have been incredibly supportive and the whole set up here in Taitung is very impressive. We have a quality field of international surfers competing, easily the biggest and best field for Taiwan and with a typhoon swell thumping the coastline it should be an interesting few days of action and I've no doubt there'll be some high scoring exciting performances."
WSL also welcomed famous big wave surfer Garrett McNamara who arrived as a Mercedes Benz ambassador to the event today and enjoyed the traditional welcome and festivities.
The action begins tomorrow at 7:30am local time with Rounds 1 and 2 of the Taiwan Open shortboard scheduled.Watch live at worldsurfleague.com and on the WSL App.
