The Hawaiian was having a rough go during his Round One heat up until the 2 minute mark, when he turned the heat with a nice barrel ride. Up until that point Florence was trailing French wildcard Joan Duru, who ripped his way to an early lead with some strong backhand surfing. Florence eventually drifted down to where Duru was surfing after falling behind. His move paid off.
