Schedule: Round 4 (Heats 1 - 4) of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast
Conditions: Three-to-Four foot (1 metre) waves at Snapper Rocks. Light wind. Clear skies.
Official Assessment Gold Coast - 03/04/14
Heat 1: Courtney Conlogue (USA) 12.83 def. Pauline Ado (AUS) 10.73
Snapper Rocks continued to deliver the goods this afternoon as the elimination Round 4 commenced with Californian Courtney Conlogue up against France's Pauline Ado.
Conlogue took command from the start, bulldogging her way out of Snapper barrels and punctuating with powerful turns.
Ado answered back with some stylish combinations of her own, but couldn't overcome the onslaught from the American.
Heat 2: Malia Manuel (HAW) 10.83 def. Paige Hareb (NZL) 8.60
In what would continue to be an incredible day of action Hawaiian Malia Manuel would battle Kiwi Paige Hareb for a slot in the Quarterfinals.
While the heat would prove to be a lower scoring bout in comparison to the earlier rounds, Manuel would lock in to a beautiful Snapper Set wave, igniting a massive forehand snap followed with a swooping carve, notching a 7.83 for the ride. While the Hawaiian's backup ride of a 3.00 would leave Hareb only needing an average score for the win, Manuel's impressive opening ride would prove enough to the win.
Manuel's advancement in to the Quarterfinals will see put her up against Carissa Moore in an all-Hawaiian match up, while Hareb's exit garners a ninth place result.
Heat 3: Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) 16.77 def. Alessa Quizon (HAW) 12.93
Snapper Rocks continued to fire in all her glory this afternoon for the battle of the goofy-footers between Bianca Buitendag and Alessa Quizon.
Both power surfers, Buitendag applied her physicality while Quizon capitalized on her speed.
In the end, it was Buitendag's backhand dominance of the Snapper bank that would result in victory.
Heat 4: Lakey Peterson (USA) 15.37 def. Dimity Stoyle (AUS) 6.64
The historic day in women's surfing would be punctuated with progressive American Lakey Peterson and rookie Australian Dimity Stoyle battling for the final Quarterfinals slot.
Both Peterson and Stoyle would trade off a series of midrange scores throughout the majority of the heat, but Peterson would unload on a Snapper Rocks runner with 10 minutes remaining, securing a 7.83 and quickly finding a similar backup score to edge out Stoyle for the win.
