Momentum Generation: The Story of Legends
WSL
Momentum Generation, produced by Robert Redford is available now on HBO. You can stream it here if you are an HBO subscriber.
The film follows surfers Kelly Slater, Shane Dorian, Rob Machado, Paul Roach, Pat O'Connell, Kalani Robb, and Taylor Knox as they roam about the North Shore of Oahu in the early 90s. Although they probably didn't know it at the time, their posse would become synonymous with terms like 'World Champion'.
The documentary is a sequel to Taylor Steele's Momentum: Under the Influence which came out in 2001 and highlighted surfers Andy Irons, Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson.
Unlike it's precursor, Momentum Generation surrounds one location: Benji Weatherley's house -- which sat right in front of Pipeline almost two decades ago. The legendary crew spent most of their time hanging out in his front yard and making home videos, showcasing various styles.
"We didn't think people would actually want to watch the surf movies we were making," said Weatherley. "It was literally just like you and your friends making home videos that ended up having a cult following. We had no idea at the time that we would end up being a part of the momentum generation. I mean we were just these 14-year-old kids pulling into 10-foot waves at Pipeline".
Twenty years after the fact, the crew gets back together for a surf trip filled with old stories and endless reminiscing - making for a relevant documentary on an important part of surfing history.
