TRANSPORTATION: Fly in to Perth International and rent yourself a car or caravan for the three-hour drive down to Margaret River. The region holds such an incredible coastline that you owe it to yourself to do some exploring in the car.
ATTITUDE: The staggering beauty of the Western Australia countryside cannot be overstated enough and it permeates through the communities, waves and people. It is a fortunate land and the locals are friendly and accomplished watermen. They love when the tour comes to town.
THE WAVE(S): Several stellar options exist for the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. Main Break at Margaret River is a lefthand and righthand reef break that can produce excellent waves from two-to-20 feet. Across the bay from Main Break is the infamous righthand slab called The Box and if things get REALLY big out West, the world-famous North Point righthander is a spicy choice.
PERKS: Some of the most beautiful country you will ever have the pleasure of visiting. In addition to the world-class surf, the Margaret River region also boasts one of the foremost vineyard populations on the planet. Enjoy a few glasses and watch the sunset on the Australian continent.
PERILS: Western Australia is wild and raw. It is beautiful but can be dangerous. Wildlife is abundant both in and out of the water with regular shark sightings each year. Proceed with caution.
APRES SURF: Downtown Margaret River is home to a number of excellent pubs and eateries. Margaret River is a quiet town, but there are plenty of after-surf options to enjoy.
ASP WORLD TOUR HISTORY: Margaret River has been a staple for the world's best surfers since 1985, beginning its history on the Men's WCT as the Swan Margaret River Thriller while the women would join for a combined event beginning in 1989. Western Australia would return to the Women's WCT in 2013 and after over a decade as a Qualification Series Event, 2014 will mark the return of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro to the elite schedule for both the Top 34 and 17.
NOTABLE: While Margaret River has been on the calendar in various capacities from ASP 3-Star to WCT levels, it has seen no shortage of elite champions throughout history. Occy took out the inaugural event and won again in 2003, Tom Carroll won back-to-back in 86 and 87, former World Champ Barton Lynch and Gary 'Kong' Elkerton have won at Margaret River and the likes of Josh Kerr, John John Florence, Damien Hobgood and Dusty Payne have won most recently.
For the ladies, Wendy Botha dominated at Margaret River upon its inception, Melanie Redman-Carr won three times and current ASP WCT campaigner Courtney Conlouge took out two Drug Aware Margaret River Pro Titles as an ASP 6-Star event. Reigning two-time ASP Women's World Champ Carissa Moore kicked off her World Title run at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro in 2013.
