Mikey Wright has been on the JS Industries program for a long time, and after a year sidelined with injury, he's back in the water and armed with a sick quiver of new boards from shaper Jason Stevenson.
In the latest installment of Surfer Magazine's series "Quivers," we get an in-depth look at what exactly Mikey is riding right now. Here's the breakdown:
Monster: 6'0" x 18 3/4 x 2 5/16
This is Mikey's everyday driver. He keeps the particular model with flames he shares in the video on ice until he's surfing a heat, but you can be sure he's broken countless others of the same ilk. "I think JS has perfected my Monsta a little bit different than the normal one," says Mikey.
Forget Me Not: 6'0" x 18 3/4" x 2 5/16"
Mikey's step-up features a rounded pin and little bit straighter outline. If the waves are a little bigger he'll pump up the jam and move to a 6'2". "Better for hacks, better for barrels," describes Mikey.
Flaming Fish: 5'3" x 20 1/8" x 2 5/16"
Soon to be released from JS, this is Mikey's go-to version of the fish design. Short, fat and fun, the footage in the edit shows him putting the board through its paces at Lower Trestles. "I've pushed it pretty hard and it still holds a rail," he testifies.
Red Barron: 5'4" x 20 1/8" x 2 7/16"
Another board that has yet to be released by JS, this is a twin-fin, meant to be ridden with "keel fins, or somethin'." Mikey's only been on board a short while, but he's got a freshie in his rack, so expect to see him flying down the line on it more.
Black Barron: 5'6" x 19 3/4" x 2 5/16"
The only place Mikey remembers riding this model is in Fiji, and judging by the footage, it didn't disappoint. "Held in pretty good, pretty fast too," he says. "I found a little bit funner because you could slow down a fair bit and speed up when you need to."
