It started big and just kept getting bigger. On January 16, 2021, the Hawaiian Islands were hammered by a massive northwest swell that closed out Waimea and turned Jaws into a full-on gladiator pit.
As numbers go, the North Maui Buoy peaked 22 feet at 17 seconds yesterday, but with the winds whipping, there were some absolutely psychotic waves coming through.
The lineup was occupied by a who's who of big-wave heavies, including Nathan Florence, Kai Lenny, Makuakai Rothman, Brad Domke, Justine Dupont, Albee Layer, 12-year-old Steve Roberson and Ian Walsh, as well as his more underground brother Shaun Walsh.
