Julian Wilson has been in the World Title conversation for years now, and with a record number of Championship Tour events at home in Australia and a new WSL Finals format at Trestles which will favor progressive surfing, this could finally be his year.
The Tour is about to resume with the Rip Curl Newcastle Cup presented by Corona. Merewether is a top-notch beachbreak, but like all beach breaks the quality of the waves is especially dependent on variables such as sandbanks and the wind.
Julian recently spent a few weeks at home on the Sunshine Coast, surfing the often cross-shore waves which helped fill his skate-like bag of tricks, and the resulting clip is a perfect little preview of his form going into the first event of the Australian leg.
As you can see, if Newcastle is windy and, shall we say, less than perfect, Julian can make the most of challenging conditions as well as anyone.
The world number 17 also recently surfed the Vissla Central Coast Pro QS event at Avoca, which was another perfect warm-up for Newcastle.
