Despite some seriously heroic efforts, current World No. 1 Gabriel Medina remains undefeated in Championship Tour competition at the Surf Ranch. And now, with his iron grip on the WSL Leaderboard and a clear path to the Rip Curl WSL Finals, he'll be looking to three-peat under the scorching Lemoore sun.
In 2018, Medina was coming off a buzzer-beater win at the Tahiti Pro Teahupo'o and was in phenomenal form. Firing on all cylinders, he had the Surf Ranch Pro trophy sewn up before he even took his final two runs. Filipe Toledo, Kanoa Igarashi and Julian Wilson all had a shot at him, but when Wilson fell on this fourth attempt at a big spin, Medina clinched it.
The defending event champ takes to the air to claim a 9.00 and an 8.77 at the Freshwater Pro pres. by Outerknown.
"That was the most high-performance wave we've ever surfed," said Medina. "The thing about here is that you have to surf both ways good, backhand and forehand."
He'd win the event with a total score of 17.78, but the next year Medina proved he was capable of much more.
Again, Toledo proved to be his main rival, but locking in a near-perfect heat score of 18.86, he was not to be denied.
"It's been a long three days for me, but it's amazing to win against these guys like Julian, Filipe, Owen, and Griffin," Medina said after going back to back at the Ranch.
So, can he keep the undefeated streak alive? Can Toledo finally get him? Can Colapinto sneak a win off him? We'll just have to watch and find out.
The Brazillian earns a 9.13, one of the highest scoring waves of the contest on the notoriously difficult left-hander in Lemoore.
