For the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, World Surf League teamed up on a coastal restoration project with Lakey Peterson, Bettylou Sakura Johnson, Conner Coffin, Connor O'Leary, and Kaipo Guerrero alongside #weareoneocean coalition partners North Shore Community Land Trust, Nā Kama Kai, and #ShiseidoBlue.
As surfers, we rely on reef ecosystems for amazing waves and the restoration of marine and coastal habitats provide a range of ecological benefits such as providing pollutant filtering services which ultimately reduce flood water and stormwater impacts, maintaining healthy reefs, and aiding in a larger ecosystem recovery of native plants, threatened sea birds, endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals, endangered Green Sea Turtles and other invertebrates that are residents of these areas.
