The WSL is saddened by the loss of Brazilian big wave surfer Márcio Freire, who passed away on January 5, 2023, after suffering an accident while surfing Nazaré. We share our deepest sympathies with Freire's family and friends. He was fondly referred to as one of the 'Mad Dogs,' alongside Danilo Couto and Yuri Soledade, some of the first to prove paddling in at Jaws was possible.
