The Vans Surf Pro Classic has announced the wildcards who have been awarded entry into the QS1,000 men's and women's events that will be run in Lamberts Bay on the West Coast from Friday to Sunday 2-4 June.

The men's event sees renowned big-wave charger Josh Redman (Durban) take up a position in the Round of 64 while highly rated juniors, Ford Van Jaarsveldt (Kommetjie) and Calvin Goor(Salt Rock), will start in the Round of 72.

"I'm super stoked to be in the event, I haven't surfed a contest for quite a while so thanks to Vans, my new head-to-toe sponsor," said Redman. "It's going to be a really fun event and the surf is looking great so I'm looking forward to a good weekend."

The sponsor's wildcard for the women's event has been allocated to former South African champion Stacey Guy (Melkbosstrand) who will be competing in her first event of the year. The WSL wildcard has been awarded to Crystal Hulett (St Francis Bay), currently the second highest rated South African woman, who will join Guy in starting in the quarterfinals at Lamberts Bay.

The Vans Surf Pro Classic also includes a JQS1,000 event for men aged 18-and-under and features 20 international competitors from Hawaii, USA, Australia, Brazil, Peru and Japan, all of whom are keen to test their skills at the break dubbed the ‘Trestles' of Africa after the outstanding waves experienced last year.

At stake is prize money totaling R70,000 along with rankings points on the WSL QS leaderboard for men and women which determine their qualification for and seeding in events worldwide. The junior men earn points that count towards selection of the WSL Africa squad who will represent the region in the annual WSL World Junior Championships in Australia in January 2018.

WSL Africa members will also accumulate points that determine the 2017 regional champions who qualify for entry into the biggest QS events internationally.

Beyrick De Vries (uMhlanga), who finished fifth in the QS6,000 rated event in Japan last weekend, is the top seed in the men's event and will be defending the Vans title he won at Lamberts Bay last year.

Zoe McDougall (HAW) is the top seed in the women's event and current rankings leader Jake Elkington (Kommetjie) heads the field for the junior men.

Live scoring for the Vans Surf Pro Classic, along with results, images, video footage and news will be available on the www.worldsurfleague.com website.
