Smith Steps Up With Late Charge to Stay Out Front

Jordy Smith needed every bit of energy to get past rookie Frederico Morais during their match in the Quarterfinals on Thursday. After taking an early lead, Smith surfed well within himself on his next wave, while Frederico cranked it up a notch in the exchange, and nabbed the lead. With time running out, Smith needed more than an 8 to regain the lead. Fortunately for South African and his fans, he got angry, and turned things up a couple notches on his final ride. His flurry of vicious hacks earned him a 9.0 and the heat win. He's now reached the Semifinals three out of the last four years at Trestles.
