Competition for the Rip Curl Pro and Rip Curl Women's Pro Bells Beach was called off for the day Friday (local time) in the face of windswept conditions.
Catch the Aussie flyboy at the WSL Desk, the official call and more on Day 3 of the Rip Curl Pro waiting period.
In a parka and with hair whipping in the wind, Deputy Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer gave the call for the day from the stairs at Bells Beach. "This wind has come up so strong from yesterday," she told WSL host Chelsea Cannell. "We had such a good day yesterday and coming into today we're thinking it's going to get better [than this], so we're not on."
Ronnie Blakey added, "As you can see, conditions have deteriorated somewhat from yesterday, with that wind onshore and a bit of a drop in swell."
The good news? According to the latest Surfline forecast, swell will be on the rise through the weekend:
SATURDAY 4th: Modest, new SW swell builds through the PM.
Swell/Surf: Slow start and possibly pretty slow through the first few hours of the morning. Surf should rebuild into 3-4'+ faces over the afternoon, with possible sets in the 5'+ range (waist-shoulder, occ. head high), if the storm behaves as forecast. Stay tuned.
Wind/Weather: Easterly wind 6-9kts.
SUNDAY 5th: SW groundswell possibly builds further.
Swell/Surf: Surf in the 4-5'+ range on the face (chest-head high), with even some slightly larger sets, if the storm behaves as forecast.
Wind/Weather: Light W in the morning, trending to light to moderate onshore SW/SSW in the afternoon.*
