By any measure, the first day of action for the 2017 MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal was intense. With massive, booming conditions and the World Title race heating up, there was holding back in waves where committing was an understatement. Among those who left the beach tired but happy were Title frontrunners John John Florence and Jordy Smith, current World No. 1 and 2; as did Mick Fanning, Adriano de Souza and rookie Leonardo Fioravanti. Along with broken boards were a few Title dreams that snapped, too: For Filipe Toledo and Owen Wright, Round Two eliminations meant the end of the road for the 2017 World Title.
