The Australian actor, who plays Thor in the Marvel comic movies, surfed with Kelly Slater at the WSL Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California prior to last weekend's inaugural Founders' Cup. Despite Hemsworth being known for his acting career, he looked right at home in the barreling waves on offer. The Melbourne, Australia native grew up surfing with his family and is no stranger to heavy conditions. It's not often that we get to witness an actor that viably knows how to handle a surfboard.
"This place is incredible," said Hemsworth. "The thing is fast and it barreled. My dream as a kid was to be a pro surfer but I was never good enough to remotely consider that as a possibility. My happiest memories as a kid was surfing with my dad and my brothers. For me, it was always a perfect place to clear my head. There's this magnetic pull to the ocean that I've always had and I think that anyone that spends a moment in the ocean tends to have that same addiction."
The 34-year-old is a friend of Kelly Slater's and has accompanied him on a few surf trips in the past - making this impromptu trip to the WSL Surf Ranch possible. Hemsworth currently lives in Byron Bay - an area of Australia known for it's iconic surf spots - with his family.
"Lucky enough to surf the best wave pool on the planet," continued Hemsworth. "Big thanks to Kelly Slater and WSL for the opportunity!"
