To say that World Champion Gabriel Medina is enjoying his offseason would be an understatement.
The two-time World Champ was most recently spotted hanging with the NBA Champion Golden State Warriors in Oakland, California. Cruising up to the Bay Area, Medina told the WSL that he "just came to see them practice and go to the game."
During a break in the action at practice Medina stepped up and drilled a three-pointer in front of NBA All-Stars Steph Curry and Draymond Green.
A surfer hanging at an NBA practice may seem like a fish out of water until one considers that Warrior Head Coach Steve Kerr is a regular in the lineups around San Diego.
"I love to surf. I'm not very good at it, but I enjoy it," Kerr told Medium.com in 2018.
Playing alongside Michael Jordan, Kerr won a championship as a member of the Chicago Bulls in 1997, and later two more playing for the San Antonio Spurs. But after his 16-year NBA career was over Kerr moved to San Diego where Bulls teammate Jud Buechler fired him up on the attributes of ocean living.
"I fell in love with the place. So as soon as I moved out there, we went and got a longboard and he took me out to the ocean. And I've been enjoying it ever since," continued Kerr.
As for Medina, his encounter with the Dub Nation is just the latest in a run of good times with international sports icons. By now his friendship with Brazilian football star Neymar has been well documented. And just a few days ago Medina was just in Paris, France, where he met with French footballer Kylian Mbappé.
Not content to just hang at the beach and rest on his laurels, Medina's connection with other top athletes has elevated what it means to be a world champion surfer today.
