The board you see if most of these Jojo Roper waves has been put though its paces, but now it has been put to even better use.
It was painted by the patients, doctors, nurses and families at UCSD Cancer Center, and will be auctioned off this August at their 27th annual Luau and Legends Invitational.
Roper, a charger from California, had it on the road with him during the 2019/20 big wave season, which saw him journey to Puerto Escondido, Jaws, Waimea, Mavericks, Nazare and some outer reefs on Oahu.
Before he set off on this epic adventure, the boards were painted, so that he could represent this special cause while chasing his heavy-water dreams. This included competing in the cbdMD Jaws Big Wave Championships.
This edit is a compilation of some of the waves Roper rode over the past season.
This is a good reminder of a time of free travel, before the COVID-19 pandemic, and also just how essential our health workers are.
