Is Miguel Blanco The Next Great Portuguese Slab Slayer?
WSL
Miguel Blanco is one of Portugal's most respected surfers right now. The 24-year-old has been on tear recently. Having dropped a recent banger of clip titled In Luck, which covered a trip to heavy slab in the Canary Islands, his follow up "Euro Slayer" concentrates on the slabs and epic waves near his home at Ericeira.
The clip shows his acceleration as a surfer who can handle himself in serious heavy water. The signs of course were already there. He scored the cover of Surfer Magazine surfing the historic Nias swell in 2018, which featured some the biggest waves ever surfed at the famous Indonesian break. Given that session had a crew of the best slab hunters from all over the world it was no small achievement.
Over the last European winter pre-lockdown he partnered up with his good friend Nic Von Rupp to surf the variety of points, shallow reefs and beachbreaks of their local turf. Surfing with one of the hardest chargers on the planet clearly paid dividends as the clip shows.
While Blanco had a successful junior competitive career, and has also been awarded the CT wildcard at Peniche three times, it seems it is the ability to man handle serious slabs that he may have found his niche.
