Purple Icelandic Corn during a midnight snowsurf near Elf Mountain. Soon after this we followed Ragnar and Gaeri across a mountain pass to the Fjord were our sailing ship awaited us with a hot meal and naked women in polar bear skin blankets. Viking vibes filled the valleys and the gods painted the morning skies with pinks and oranges upon our arrival.

The evening after the #eddieaikau I was headed back to Haleiwa and decided to run out to the outer reefs on my ski. Daylight was fading and so was Ramon. (Couple beers deep each) We were both spent after one of the most amazing days of our lives but wanted to get out there one more time. Swells like that one don't come around to often. As we were headed out @surfnavarro who was on the back of my ski saw a huge cane spider crawl out of my life jacket. It just stayed on my back. He was laughing so hard he couldn't tell me. The spider eventually blew off and we made it out in time for a couple waves and poundings each. @deheeckeren

Reminiscing on this El Nio winter and all the crazy moments. There were two days the Haleiwa channel was completely blown up and ripped out. You had to time the sets wisely if you hoped to make it out in a boat. Then there was the propellor cavitation to deal with so basically it felt like you had no power. We were dumb enough to give it a go. Coming in at dark was almost as sketchy. We used our jetskis to navigate the way and time the sets. It's all about communication and timing. The shit we do to make sure we got cold beers outside the lineup. @clarklittle

Reflecting on this past week spent in Alaska stirs so many emotions. I've Surfed big waves for so long now that it takes a lot to get my heart racing. Usually the night before a big swell is when I feel the most anxious but after jumping in the water my nerves settle and I begin to feel a strange calm and comfortable familiarity. The mountains are entirely different for me. They are big, new and full of danger. I've been putting in time learning and hanging with experienced friends but I know I'll never have that same calm as I do in the sea. That would take lifetimes. I had the opportunity to open up this run in the picture here because of our friend and guide @jeffpunkrockhoke My heart was like a squirrel trying to jump out of my chest. It's all relative but I think opportunities like this where you get pushed outside of your comfort zone keep you alert and ready for anything life throws at you. We were staying at Simon Lowe's house in a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. He lives on the beach in front of a couple different amazing waves. It's cold and yes, there are Great White Shark spottings frequently. Ben, Andrew Marr (one of my favorite people) and myself were walking down the beach to surf when we spotted this Giant Squid washed up on the oceans edge. It must have been 10-12 feet long and it's eyes were as big as dinner plates. Andrew had never seen one so big. Everything on that trip seemed to be bigger, from waves, barrels, animals, Simon and meals. It's all in our DWS Africa episode. @mattp.aul #sportyoursugar #kindawesome

Clyde Aikau. What an inspiration he is. At 66 he was out there charging Waimea and representing his brother Eddie and his family's legacy. The energy at the Bay was out of this world. The waves were as big and good as they get. It was as if all of those who have past sent us their love. Huge Mahalo to the Aikau Ohana, @quicksilver, Hawaiian Water Patrol and everyone else that was involved to make this special event happen. The swell filled in later in the day. Not Eddie material but some fun moments on the outer reefs. I have a lot of respect for them deciding not to run the event, it's a tough one any way you look at it. The swell looked great on paper until the buoys hit (or didn't hit) the night before. It looked massive and then just brushed Oahu. It could have gone either way. That's Mother Nature for ya. Waimea is a very special place and needs a really perfect storm for all the elements to align for that 8hr window needed to run the #eddieaikau. The bay and Eddie call the day. #deepwatersurf @mccabe_dave

El Nio was promised and has delivered. It started off slow but the storm gates have finally been opened. This is the left at Jaws. The rider is a 19 yr old kid @pedrocaladoo in the right place at the right time with the right mindset. This perfect storm might not come together again for years. (We hope not but that's the reality) So, congratulations Pedro for putting yourself in that moment and attempting to slay what may be the biggest left ever paddled. It's been an interesting start to the winter. A few average/large swells to Hawaii with some wet weather and lots of trades. ( some great moments like this on select stretched out outer reefs) The west coast has seen a flurry of snow storms recently and some pretty big waves. Europe seems to be getting pounded by swell. Although it hasn't entirely lived up to the El Nio hype, it could all change real quick. Let's see what the holidays bring! Pic: @thefluidaperture
